Ready to move beyond the basics?

Our Progression course is designed for people who have completed our 6-week Beginners’ Course - or a similar beginners’ course elsewhere - within the last 12 weeks and are ready to develop their skills and start working more independently.

Unlike our Beginners’ Course, there is no set project or lesson plan. You choose what you'd like to make and which techniques you'd like to develop, with guidance, demonstrations and troubleshooting from me when you need it.

The aim is to help you become more confident working independently, develop your own ideas and make the transition from following a beginners' course to developing your own pottery practice.

You can work on the pottery wheel, hand-build, use the slab roller, experiment with moulds or work on glazing and finishing, depending on your project and what's available during your session.

This is not suitable for complete beginners.

If you're new to ceramics, take a look at our Monday, Wednesday or Thursday 6-week Introduction to Pottery courses.

How It Works

Progression sessions take place on Mondays between 5:00pm and 8:00pm.

When booking, you'll choose a preferred arrival time of 5:00pm, 5:30pm or 6:00pm. You have 12 hours to use across 8 weeks. The minimum session time is 2 hours. You can also split sessions to suit you, e.g. 3 sessions at 2 hours, 2 sessions at 3 hours (totalling 12 hours).

For consistency, we encourage you to keep to the same arrival time each week, although occasional changes can be accommodated where space allows.

You don't need to attend every week. Your 6 sessions can be used flexibly over an 8-week period, giving you plenty of flexibility for holidays, work and other commitments. We do recommend attending regularly so that you can build momentum and continue progressing.

Groups have a maximum of 10 people at any one time, with space for up to 5 people on the pottery wheels and up to 5 people working in the hand-building, glazing and other studio areas.

Wheel access is not guaranteed, particularly during busy sessions. We encourage you to make use of the full studio and develop confidence across both wheel and hand-building techniques.

There may also be some crossover between groups, as your 8-week period may overlap with people who started on a different date.

Dates

New groups start approximately once a month.

Available start dates for 2026:

  • 28th September

  • 9th November

Each group has a maximum of 5 new participants, although groups may overlap during their 8-week period.

You will receive 12 hours of guided studio use, which must be used within 8 weeks of your chosen start date. Sessions cannot be carried forward beyond this period.

Any scheduled studio closure days will not count towards your 8-week period.

Additional Information

  • This course is intended for people with previous experience of natural, kiln-fired clay. It is not suitable for complete beginners or those whose only experience is with air-dry or oven-baked clay.

  • Ceramics can be surprisingly physical. A reasonable level of hand dexterity and grip strength is required. If you have any concerns, please get in touch before booking.

  • Ages 16+. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

  • The studio is on a light industrial site, so some noise from neighbouring units should be expected during weekday hours, particularly before 5pm.

  • The studio can be cold in cooler weather. Heaters are provided, but please dress warmly.

  • Finished work will be kept for 14 days after notification, after which it will be disposed of due to limited storage space.

  • Once your course is booked, you'll receive an email in the week before the start date with further information.

  • Please read and familiarise yourself with the refund and cancellation policy.

Photography & Recording

You're welcome to take a few quick photos or short video clips of your own work for personal use or social media, provided this doesn't disrupt the class or capture other participants without their permission.

To protect the learning experience and everyone's privacy, recording substantial parts of a class, audio recording, live-streaming or using wearable recording devices, including Meta smart glasses, is not permitted.
